This has been a fun series to create and I am glad you have all been enjoying this lockdown series. Here’s fun item number three of 5 Fun Things To Do At Home This Weekend, have a home picnic with a simple cheese board!
Ever had a picnic indoors? It is actually the elegant version of your childhood slumber party, with snacks, some fancy cheese board and of course some cocktails (for the grown-ups). I've always loved picnics and they are one of my favourite things to do outdoors in the summer. But for now, while we're still social distancing and staying away from parks and crowded places, here's a simple way to have a picnic at home with your family, for date night or by yourself upgrade your Netflix binge session a little.
How To Have A Home Picnic
Set It Up:
Setting the scene for a home picnic is quite simple. All you need is a comfortable blanket or throw (I actually used old cotton), some pillows and cushions for comfort and some decor pieces to elevate the scene. I laid out some fresh flowers to add a touch of spring to the scene. Other decoration items you could use to set the scene include some frames, miniature vases, scented candles (great for date night), or some board games.
Prep It Up:
Outdoor picnic food items can range from grilled sandwiches and sliders to salads and fruit salads. An indoor picnic menu can also be diverse; I've tried a lot of things from an all junk picnic menu with my favourites sweets and chips to freshly delivered pizza and even yesterday's leftovers. But my favourite home picnic item to serve is a simple cheese board.
Here's how to make a cheeseboard at home.
Ingredients:
- 1 block of cracker barrel cheese
- 2 sticks of celery
- 1 green apple
- A handful of cherry tomatoes
- A handful of baby carrots
- A cup of mixed berries
- One head of cauliflower
- Half a cucumber
- Half red and yellow bell peppers
- Pretzel sticks
- Mixed nuts (or 1/2 of roasted almonds)
The best part of making a cheese board is that there's no cooking involved at all. The total prep time for chopping all my vegetables and laying them out was 10 minutes. Once I had them all laid out, I was ready to serve.
Serve It Up
I wanted my menu simple and light, especially since we were having a late-night picnic. We skipped the sweets and paired our cheese board with some wine. I am partial to some sparkling wine, but you can definitely pair with your favourite glass of red (or fresh fruit beverage for the kiddies) and voila!
I'm always looking to try some easy to do home activities and a fun picnic with less than 30 minutes prep time is good in my book! Have you had a home picnic before? What on your go-to home picnic menu? Share with us in the comments below.
