After a quick Instagram Story Thread, I was asked to do a full post on the best way to shop at affordable/high street brands and I am definitely happy to oblige. Over the weekend, I took some time to clear out my wardrobe and I discovered that I picked up quite a few items from affordable brands in 2018. And this best part of it was that they blended so well into my wardrobe that you would never have guessed it! So before you go shopping this year, here are some tips for shopping high street brands that can save you a couple dollars and keep you looking chic!
Shop Comtemporary
I've found that "comtemporary" is the code word for 'chic" these days. Its usually the category where brands stock their more trendy but understated items. I've watched brands like Forever21 use this term to rebrand and attract an older audience and I must say that I approve.
My red boots in this look is (shocking!) from Forever21. I say shockingly because no one ever belives me. There are some gems in high street that won't break bank.
Go Bold With Colour
I know what you're thinking, but yes, highstreet brands just get it when it comes to bold colours. A good rule would be to go for single coloured items, keep it simple but keep it bright. As an ambassador for the colour orange, i've gotten all my bright orange pieces from highstreet brands, that way I collect more and save more as well. These bright orange pants are a Zara find that I have been obsessed with since Summer '18!
Avoid Graphics
First of all, wearing graphic pieces requires some attention to detail that only few high end brands like Off White and Vetementes have been able to hack. Knowing that, I've made it a rule to never shop graphic pieces from high street brands. For most high street pieces, the graphics are usually too busy or end up saying something odd that you do not want people reading out loud.
Unless it says one word or keeps it minimal, I'd skip it all together. Less is more and minimal is definitely chic.
Go Accessory Crazy
If you are looking for fun jewelry, I beleive high street is the way to go. I know buying highend jewelry is great and you really should spend the money for a couple pieces, but for trendy jewelry...go high street. You can get access to more options that you can layer and you won't feel bad when they go out of style!
I get quite a few of my nexkalces from Forever21 (once again, go simple), Asos and Aldo Accessories.
Grab Basics and Style Up
Now here's the best tip; high street is great for basics! There are some wardrobe pieces that you definitely have to invest more, pieces like a sturdy denim jacket, a reliable pair of shoes or your everyday work bag. Those pieces you can spend a little more on. But for pieces like a simple tee to pair with those $100 pants or a bodycon dress to style with your newest clutch, save a little and indulge in some High Street.
I've found that the secret to highstreet fashion is taking the extra minute to read the product description. There are definitely some gems that you can add to your wardrobe and still look chic. Here are a few of my favourite (popular) highstreet shops you can check out!
