Summer is on our heels and that means that it's "wardrobe cleaning" time! As a chronic hoarder, I can testify that a good spring cleaning helps put life in perspective for me. However my most recent spring cleaning did not just help my mood, it inspired a new lifestyle experiment - the capsule wardrobe.
A capsule wardrobe is a condensed wardrobe selection, made up of a few clothing pieces that you are likely to wear. A capsule wardrobe is built on practicality and versatility. It takes away the burden of having a full wardrobe with "nothing to wear", and it is a heck of pill for managing FOMO in a world of fast fashion. I experimented with a capsule wardrobe for a month to help with my crazy work schedule.
There have been a lot of changes in my personal life and with fast changes, comes a desire to stay grounded. I have always had a strong connection with my wardrobe, and sometimes, living through my physical appearance is a fun way I use to manage stress (see other ways I manage stress-HERE).
Getting used to a capsule wardrobe was a bit more difficult than I expected. Mostly because retail therapy is a stress-coping mechanism for me. But with time, I got used to it. I learned to invest more time in restyling and repurposing pieces of clothing that I already owned and I truly found it more rewarding than I expected.
My favorite pieces to style where my blacks. Black shoes, bags, dresses, they all kept me grounded. Finally, styling pieces I've owned for years that I'd never tried before (like this skirt) was hilarious but oh so enjoyable! Enjoying my time and creativity, I could not ask for a better experiment.
Moving forward, am I going to stick with the capsule wardrobe long term? No, I don't believe so, but I enjoyed the process and I know I will come back to it multiple times in my life. Would I recommend creating a capsule wardrobe, yes! Just like a diet, it's a lifestyle choice and can be very beneficial. It is not as boring as its made out to be, it is as fun as your style is.
Remember to try more things, be open to more ideas. Whatever you do, make sure you enjoy it!
See ya!
